I am Julian. I am the night auditor.
To call me an employee would be a misunderstanding of the ecosystem. I am the ferryman. From midnight until eight in the morning, I stand behind the massive, scarred mahogany front desk, bathed in the sickly yellow glow of a single brass reading lamp, and I watch the damned check in.
Day guests are tourists. They bring luggage, loud voices, and expectations. They complain about the water pressure and the smell of mildew in the carpets.
Night guests are refugees. They arrive with nothing but the clothes on their backs and the shadows chasing them. They are fleeing abusive marriages, loan sharks, or the crushing, unbearable weight of their own minds. I prefer the night guests. They are honest in their ruin.
It was 1:15 AM on a Tuesday. The lobby was a cavern of silence, broken only by the rhythmic, agonizing tick-tock of the grandfather clock by the elevators. The storm outside was throwing sheets of freezing rain against the revolving glass doors, blurring the neon lights of the street into smeared, bleeding streaks of red and blue.
I opened the heavy leather ledger on the desk. I wasn't checking the guest registry. I was reviewing my inventory.
Everyone has a coping mechanism to survive the dark. Some night auditors drink. Some sleep in the back office. Some read cheap paperback thrillers.
I steal.

I steal misery.
When a guest checks out—or when they are carried out in a black bag by the paramedics, which happens more often than management admits—I am the first one into the room. I take the half-empty matchbook left by the man who paced the floor all night before finally putting a gun in his mouth. I take the single, pearl earring left by the weeping woman who fled before her husband could find her. I take the torn, crumpled photograph of a smiling child retrieved from the wastebasket of a ruined gambler.
I take these items down to my apartment—a windowless, concrete bunker in the sub-basement of the hotel, situated right next to the roaring, ancient boiler.
I have built a museum.
Along the concrete walls of my apartment, I have erected wooden shelves. On these shelves sit hundreds of small glass jars and velvet-lined display boxes. Each one holds a stolen artifact. Each one is meticulously labeled with the room number, the date, and a brief, clinical description of the tragedy I inferred from the wreckage.
I don't do it for money. I do it because I am entirely, hopelessly numb. The world outside the hotel feels like a muted, black-and-white film. I feel no joy, no sorrow, no anger. But when I hold the torn photograph of the ruined gambler, or smell the sulfur on the matchbook of the suicide, I can feel a faint, phantom echo of their pain. It was my favorite piece in the collection. The woman had brushed her hair, meticulously preparing herself for the end, and then left the broken comb on the pillow. It was a monument to the vanity of death.
The sudden, violent crash of the heavy brass revolving doors shattered my reverie.
I slammed the ledger shut and slid it under the counter. I stood up straight, smoothing the lapels of my faded burgundy uniform jacket.
The wind howled into the lobby, bringing with it a spray of freezing rain and the smell of ozone.
She stepped out of the revolving doors.
The lobby of the Hotel L’Oubli was designed to diminish people. The vaulted ceilings and massive marble pillars usually made guests look small and insignificant.
But this woman did not shrink. She commanded the space instantly.
She was tall, draped in a heavy, midnight-blue velvet coat that fell to her ankles. The rain had not touched her; she looked perfectly dry, as if the storm had respectfully parted to let her pass. Her hair was a cascade of dark, wet silk, framing a face of sharp, aristocratic angles and skin as pale as porcelain.
She carried no luggage. No handbag. Just a small, black leather valise clutched in her gloved hand.
She walked across the lobby. Her heels did not click against the marble; they seemed to glide, producing a soft, rhythmic whisper that echoed in the cavernous room.
She stopped at the front desk. The scent of her hit me—it wasn't the cheap lavender or stale tobacco of my usual ghosts. It was an intoxicating, expensive blend of crushed orchids, petrichor, and something dark and metallic, like copper wire.
"Good evening, Madame," I said, my voice a practiced, hollow monotone. "Welcome to the Hotel L’Oubli. Do you have a reservation?"
She looked at me. Her eyes were a startling, luminous violet. They didn't just look at my face; they seemed to bore directly through my skull, scanning the empty, echoing chambers of my mind.

Her voice was a dark, melodic purr that sent a sudden, involuntary shiver down my spine. I hadn't given her my name. I wasn't wearing a nametag.
"I see," I replied, maintaining my professional mask, though my heart had begun to beat a slightly faster rhythm. "We have several vacancies tonight. A standard room on the second floor, or perhaps a suite overlooking the ocean?"
"Neither," she said, placing her gloved hands on the scarred mahogany counter. "I require a very specific accommodation. I want Room 404."
The air in my lungs turned to ice.
Room 404 was on the fourth floor, at the very end of a dead-end hallway. It was the room with the balcony. The room where the woman with the tortoiseshell comb had taken her final step. Because of its history, and the persistent complaints from maids about cold spots and the smell of lavender, management had unofficially retired the room. It hadn't been rented in three years.
"I apologize, Madame," I said smoothly, tapping the keys of my ancient computer terminal. "Room 404 is currently out of service for maintenance. The plumbing—"
"The plumbing is fine, Julian," she interrupted, her violet eyes locking onto mine with a terrifying, absolute authority. "The room is empty. The bed is made. The balcony doors are locked. I want Room 404."
She reached into her velvet coat and pulled out a thick stack of banknotes. She dropped them onto the counter.
I looked down. They were not modern currency. They were old, out-of-circulation bills, crisp and perfectly preserved. It was enough money to rent the penthouse for a month.
"I will be staying indefinitely," she said. "And I do not wish to be disturbed by the housekeeping staff. No one enters that room but me."
I stared at the money. I stared at her. The golden rule of the night shift is that you do not ask questions. You take the cash, you hand over the key, and you forget the face.
I reached under the counter, opened the heavy iron lockbox, and retrieved the brass key for Room 404. It was heavy and cold, the metal tarnished from years of disuse.
I placed it on the counter and slid it toward her.
"Room 404, Madame," I said. "The elevators are to your left. May I ask what name to put in the registry?"
She picked up the brass key, her gloved fingers wrapping around the metal. A slow, enigmatic smile curved her lips.
"You may call me Madame Vesper," she whispered.
She turned and walked toward the elevators. I watched her midnight-blue coat disappear into the shadows of the hallway. The heavy brass doors of the elevator opened with a mechanical groan, swallowed her, and slid shut.
The lobby returned to its suffocating silence. The grandfather clock ticked. The rain battered the glass.
I stood behind the desk, my hands resting on the mahogany. A strange, electric tension lingered in the air where she had stood. The scent of crushed orchids and copper wire refused to dissipate.
I reached under the counter and pulled out my ledger. I opened it to the entry for Room 404. I looked at the description of the tortoiseshell comb.
Why did she want that specific room? Was she a relative of the woman who jumped? A morbid tourist who had heard the rumors?
I shook my head. It didn't matter. She was just another ghost in the Hotel L’Oubli. She would stay in the dark, she would leave her money, and eventually, she would check out. And when she did, I would go up to Room 404 and see what new misery she had left behind for my museum.
The hours dragged on. 2:00 AM bled into 2:30 AM. The storm outside intensified, the thunder rattling the massive crystal chandeliers above my head.
I sat on the high stool behind the desk, reading a worn paperback, letting the white noise of the rain numb my brain.
At exactly 3:00 AM, the silence was shattered.
It wasn't the revolving doors. It was the switchboard.
The Hotel L’Oubli still used an antiquated, 1950s-era mechanical switchboard for internal calls. It sat to my right, a massive wall of brass plugs and braided black cords.
A loud, angry BUZZ erupted from the board. A small, red light illuminated above one of the brass jacks.
I stared at it.
The red light was glowing above the jack for Room 404.
My stomach tightened. Night guests rarely called the front desk. They didn't want room service. They didn't want extra towels. They wanted to be invisible.
The buzzer sounded again, harsh and demanding.
I reached out, my hand trembling slightly, and pulled the heavy black receiver from its cradle. I plugged the brass jack into the slot for 404.
I brought the receiver to my ear.
"Front desk," I said, my voice echoing in the empty lobby. "This is Julian. How may I assist you, Madame Vesper?"
For a long moment, there was only the sound of static on the line. A thick, heavy hiss of electricity that sounded like the ocean roaring inside a seashell.
Then, her voice cut through the static. It was a dark, melodic whisper, sounding as though she were standing right behind me, her lips brushing against my ear.
"Julian," she purred.
"Yes, Madame?"
"The room is quite lovely," she said. "The view of the storm from the balcony is magnificent. But I find myself in need of a specific amenity. Something to help me pass the time."
"Of course," I replied, reaching for a notepad. "Would you like me to send up a bottle of wine? Extra blankets?"
"No," she whispered. The static on the line seemed to pulse, growing louder, then softer, matching the rhythm of her breathing. "I don't need wine, Julian. I need something to brush my hair."
I froze. The pen stopped moving over the notepad.
"I can send up a complimentary plastic comb from our toiletry supply," I managed to say, my throat suddenly dry.
"I don't want a plastic comb," she replied, her voice dropping an octave, vibrating with a terrifying, intimate knowledge. "I want a tortoiseshell comb. Specifically, I want one that is missing exactly three teeth near the center."
The dopamine hit me. It was a massive, apocalyptic explosion in the center of my brain. The blood drained from my face, leaving me dizzy and breathless.
I gripped the edge of the mahogany desk to keep from collapsing.
"I... I don't know what you mean, Madame," I stammered, the professional mask shattering completely.
"Don't lie to me, Julian," she whispered, the dark amusement in her voice unmistakable. "I know you have it. I know it smells of cheap lavender water and stale tobacco. I know you took it from the pillow before the maids arrived three years ago."
My lungs seized. The lobby spun around me.
How could she know? No one knew about the sub-basement. No one knew about the museum. I had never spoken a word of it to another living soul. It was my absolute, darkest secret, buried beneath tons of concrete and steel.
"Bring it to me, Julian," she commanded, the purr hardening into an absolute, undeniable order. "Bring it to Room 404. I am waiting."
The line went dead. The heavy click of the receiver being hung up echoed in my ear, followed by the dial tone.
I stood paralyzed behind the desk, the black receiver still pressed to my ear.
She wasn't a relative. She wasn't a tourist.
She was a predator. And she hadn't just checked into the hotel. She had checked into my mind.
I slowly lowered the receiver back into its cradle. I looked at the red light on the switchboard, still glowing like a drop of fresh blood in the dark.
I looked down at the floor, toward the hidden stairwell that led to the sub-basement. To my museum.
I was Julian. I was the night auditor. I was the man who stole misery from the dead.
And now, the misery was calling down from Room 404, demanding to be returned.
